If you live in the United States you may have heard a rumor that will affect your upcoming air travel plans. The TSA will be requiring US-resident travelers to carry the REAL ID which is a new type of “Passport ID” when boarding domestic flights that has them green-lighted to for air travel. Several states have already been implementing this new travel regulation including Maine, Kentucky and Minnesota.

Due to COVID, the original date for this requirement to go into effect has been delayed to May 3, 2023 – but we forewarned … it is taking a long time for REAL IDs to be sent out. Ary is still waiting on his and it’s been a year since he applied in person.

If by after May 3, 2023 you have not received your REAL ID but wish to travel by plane, you can use a passport.

What you’ll need to apply for a REAL ID in California:

  • Proof of identity (U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, permanent resident card, foreign passport with an approved form I-94. A school ID card is not accepted). Note: A name change document, such as a marriage certificate or court-filed adoption papers, is required if you legally changed your name.
  • Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2 form, paystub with full SSN).
  • Proof of California address (rental agreement, cell phone bill, official school documents that include your birthday).

Unfortunately,  those with AB 60 driver’s license are not eligible for a REAL ID.

Questions you’re probably wondering about the REAL ID:

1. Do my kids need to apply for a REAL ID to travel?

Good news, those under 18 years of age, don’t need to apply for the REAL ID to travel on domestic flights.

2. How much does the REAL ID cost?

The REAL ID costs $38 is California, the same as a regular drivers license.

NOTE: CA DMV is waiving REAL ID fees for those who got new licenses during pandemic. To take advantage of this!

3. What happens is you dont have the ID but you have a flight booked?

If you’re traveling without a REAL ID, you’ll likely have to go through the same process that those without a form of ID currently have to endure … an interview with TSA officers. If they decide not to let you board, it’s unlikely that the airline will give you a refund.

4. What to do if you lose the REAL ID?

You’ll have to go to the DMV to get a replacement. Right now, the online portal will direct you to go to the DMV for replacement instead of letting you order one like you would a normal driver’s license.

5. Can you travel to Canada or Mexico with a REAL ID?

No, with REAL ID cards you cannot cross over international borders.

6. So how do I apply for a REAL ID in California?

You have to start the process online, then gather the required documents and make an appointment at the DMV!
