Zagreb, Croatia is an old soul filled with remarkable old buildings 
and hundreds of museums. It’s a walking museum, one could say. One exhibit I was intrigued to check out was the Museum of Broken Relationships. We had heard about the museum from a group of backpackers we met in Mostar at the beginning of our trip and had mentioned that the museum was amazing.
Incidentally, we actually found the museum by accident while we were exploring historic Uppertown Zagreb, so we knew we just had to go inside.
The Museum of Broken Relationships is not your conventional museum that you would typically find in Zagreb. Tough the gallery is one that most people can relate to.
Let’s face it, everyone has had their heart ripped out at one point in their life and perhaps are stashing a memento or two hiding in closets (whether we know it or not). It was a little weird walking in there with my now ex- boyfriend, but I got over that feeling and went through the memories of hundreds of people who felt compelled to their heart break or love story with a small memento.
The exhibit is comprised of artifacts and stories from past relationships as well as unspoken confrontations (some with dry humor, some sad) to a former lover that have been donated to the museum.
We weren’t able to take photos of the gallery, but I found some great photos of artifacts on the museum’s website.
The Museum of Broken Relationships has quite the collection. What’s ironic about the museum is that the founders of it used to be together in a four-year relationship. Apparently, after their relationship failed the two remained friends and decided it would be a great idea to have a museum of each others left over items from the relationship.
All of the pieces in their exhibit are donated by people from all over the world, but it started with collecting remnants donated from their friends’ failed relationships. The pieces all come with captions of what the item symbolizes from the person who donated the item. The great thing about the captions is that they’re translated into 6 languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, English.)
Where the exhibit has been: Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Macedonia, the Philippines, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The touring exhibit has been to several states in the US. In case you missed it, there’s an exhibit currently in Amsterdam at the Oude Kerk Cathedral, but there is also a permanent exhibition in Zagreb. I highly recommend checking out the exhibit if you find yourself in Zagreb and if you don’t have the time to check out the whole exhibit, they have a great bookstore and cafe as well.

Cost: Like all museums in Zagreb, there is a student discount for admission if you have your school ID card with you. Regular admission is 25 KN, but for students and seniors the costs it is 20 KN.

Isn’t this SUCH a great idea? I honestly can’t remember if there were any handwritten letters, but I wouldn’t doubt it. Croatia is wonderful, you will love the museum and the country!
This is a great idea. When my friend was cleaning out years after a breakup, she decided to leave her old love letters inside library books at the library. I’d love to go to a museum like this.
