Let’s quickly talk about the unmentionables…the best type of underwear you should wear in hot, humid climates while traveling. It’s a serious issue, wear the wrong material and you’re going to feel uncomfortable. Trust me, I’ve been there.
Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re traveling to a tropical climate and plan to travel light:
- Pack undergarments that are made with fast-drying fabric. This makes it easier to wash regularly and air dry so that you’ll only have to pack 4 or 5 articles.
- Heavy cotton isn’t the best option for hot, humid climates. Yes, they’re comfortable, but they’re not practical in the tropics. Cotton takes much longer to dry and if you’re hiking and sweating all day, the wicking properties don’t compare to other materials.
- If you’re on a budget you can easily wash your clothes in the sink using a mild bar of soap if you don’t have detergent. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap also works great. Just wash and rinse, then hang them up to air dry.
My underwear recommendation? Icebreaker Merino Wool Underwear
Why the IceBreaker Merino Wool is a Great Fit for the Humid Tropics
The fabric is 95% Merino wool and is breathable as well as lightweight making it an easy item to wash and while it does absorb sweat, the wool evaporates the moisture.
The fabric is also odorless because wool is antibacterial, so you don’t have to worry about your merino wool bra or underwear smelling holding odor at the end of the day.
I have the Sprite RacerBack Sports Bra and I really enjoy the support as someone on the smaller end. I’m not sure how much support it offers larger cup sizes, so I recommend trying it on at an Icebreaker store if there is one near you or at an REI. You can always order it online and return it if it doesn’t feel comfortable or doesn’t offer the type of support you were hoping for.
The matching Sprite Merino Wool underwear comes in boy shorts and full coverage hipkinis for maximum comfort in a variety of colors. The underwear offers the exact same protection from sweat, odor and most discomfort after a long day of exploring. The lightweight material is also ideal to wash and air dry so even if you have 3 pairs of underwear with you, you won’t feel as though you have under packed.
