In the short time that I’ve been in Buenos Aires, I’ve probably gained about 15 lbs eating so much amazing food! To offset some of that weight I’ve been running at the nearby parks, but the important thing here is the food! From empanadas to parillas, I am floored by the delicious food my taste buds are enjoying. Traveling on the US dollar at the blue dollar rate also makes it a bit easier to try more food because it can get a bit pricy. So far each meal has been under $10, usually averaging about $6 dollars.ย  I welcome you to my favorite meals in Buenos Aires!

Argentine Beef

argentine_steak

Here I present to you the art of Argentine beef! Every single cut was juicy and tender! Steak can range from 100 pesos to 200 pesos at most great parillas, but you don’t have to search hard for something amazing. The photo on the bottom right is from La Dorita in Belgrano. The three steaks are actually per person, but it’s served together on a platter. Many Argentine restaurants have a Menu del Dia or menu of the day which includes an appetizer, a main dish, a side, dessert and a drink. At La Dorita the set menu included that slab of steak called Vacio de Lomo and as a side I ordered sweet potato fries, beef chorizo as an appetizer, flan for dessert and a Quilmes beer all for 110 pesos which equates to $7.30 USD at the current Blue Dollar rate. Back home, $7.30 would just pay for a side order of fries and a soda.

Empanadas

empanada

I love empanadas, they remind me of Armenian boregs with a twist! Empanadas are pastry puffs usually oven baked and filled with different ingredients. To differentiate the different empanadas, the baker will usually twist the ends differently or shape the empanada in a circle rather than a crescent. My favorite empanadas so far have been the chicken, ground beef and albahaca which is cheese, basil and tomato. Empandas are usually about 12 pesos each so about 80 cents. They’re great as snacks, a quick lunch or as a side.

Medialuna and Cafe con Leche

medialuna

While not the most exciting of meals, medialunas and coffee have been my go-to breakfast option every morning. Medialuna is the same thing as a crescent roll or croissant. Any cafe you walk into will have medialunas and sometimes as a set with coffee. My go to spot in Palermo is a block away from my apartment, called Piacere. They sell 3 medialunas and coffee for 40 pesos which is about $2.60 USD.

Chimichurri Steak Sandwich

sandwhichIf you’ve ever tried chimichurri, you could only imagine how great this sandwich tastes. It’s a beef steak sandwich on a roll with chimichurri, sweet pickled peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. It’s a filling and delicious lunch time meal for only 20 pesos which is about $1.30USD. It’s the good stuff.

Parilla de Asado for Lots of People

parilla

While not everyone visiting Argentina will have a chance to witness such a massive parilla, I can say that I have! I attended a special Pan-Armenian sporting event in Buenos Aires called Navasartian Games and this is how they fed the athletes and all the guests! Looks mouth-watering doesn’t it? There is a variety of beef cuts here as well as chorizo which are sausages and chicken. Oh, and it tasted as good as it looks.

Have you ever been to Buenos Aires or to an Argentine restaurant? What’s your favorite dish?

  1. Great post!!! I loved it. I am going to share it on the Facebook Page of the Argentinian Restaurant where I work in London!! Enjoy my country and eat as much as you want without feeling guilty. You will have time to burn those pounds in the USA. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Sounds like the place to get as much high quality meat as you can! I’m guessing that’s what they’re famous for?

    1. Yeah! They’re famous for their grass-fed beef and utilization of all the best cuts you rarely find in any average supermarket in the US. So it is definitely the place to eat steak for sure and at because of the USD- ARS exchange rate, an entire steak dinner may cost less than an appetizer at a restaurant in the US. Good stuff!!

  3. omg!!!!! delicioso. i just had my breakfast but i got hungry after looking this pics.
