Big Island Bites: Poke, Beer, and Toddler-Friendly Eats

We just got back from the Big Island, and while traveling with a toddler adds a new layer of logistics (read: constantly chasing a small human around), we still managed to eat some incredible food and explore the island at our own pace around Kona.

Best Poke Bowl of My Life

I’ve had a lot of poke over the years, but the one I had at Sushi Cocor in Kona was next level. The quality of the fish was insane—fresh, buttery, and perfectly cut. You’ll find it on the menu as “Hawaiian Poke Chirashi.” You could tell the Japanese sushi chefs behind the counter took pride in every detail. If you’re a poke fan, this spot is a must.

Da Braddahz Grindz: No-Frills, Big Portions

We also ate at Da Braddahz Grindz, a food truck parked near Safeway in Kona, and it did not disappoint. They don’t upcharge for shrimp (huge plus), so we went for the garlic shrimp and coconut shrimp, along with Korean chicken, katsu and teriyaki beef. Portions were generous, perfect for sharing, and every bite was packed with flavor.

Kona Brewing Co: A Brewery Stop, Obviously

It wouldn’t be a trip for us without a brewery visit, so we hit up Kona Brewing Co. I used to buy their beer in LA, so visiting the actual brewery felt like a full-circle moment. It’s a casual spot making it a great spot to go with a toddler and it has a great vibe the food was solid. The tuna tartare was fresh, and the Kohala pizza—with crushed macadamia nuts—was unexpectedly amazing. Diego, of course, got chicken strips with a side of fruit, and the laid-back setting made it a great place to kick back after a long day. It was actually our favorite place to eat with a toddler because it gave us an opportunity to be out for dinner at a place that has a vibe without worrying that he was going to be too loud or too much.

Basik Acai

For acai bowls, we loved Basik Acai. It’s got this cool, two-story hut-style building and a picnic bench outside where you can sit and enjoy your food. Perfect for a morning stop before heading out to explore. I’m pretty sure this was Diego’s first time having an acai bowl and he devoured it!

The Food Scene on Ali‘i Drive

There are a ton of restaurants on Ali‘i Drive with stunning ocean views, but the menus mostly leaned toward what I’d call “tourist bar food.” It’s hit or miss though, as it is where we found Sushi Cocor. If you’re looking for more local flavors, I’d say venture beyond the main strip.

Traveling with a Toddler

Dining out with a toddler means quick meals, outdoor seating whenever possible, and always having a backup snack on hand. While Diego’s in a picky phase right now, we still found plenty of options that worked for all of us. The Big Island has a nice balance of casual and quality, making it a great spot for family travel.

We’ll definitely be back—next time, maybe with a slightly less wiggly kid!
