Tuesday is a great day for IHG rewards lovers because the new IHG PointBreaks list comes out. I am looking forward to seeing what’s on the list this time around. During the IHG PointBreaks promotion, you’re able to book rooms for 5,000 points per night regardless of the hotel category for stays from May 27, 2014 to July 31, 2014.
IHG did release a small preview of hotels that are part of the PointBreaks promotion this quarter:
Crowne Plaza Hotel Bangkok- Lumpini Park, Thailand
Crowne Plaza Johannesburg-The Rosebank, South Africa
Hotel Indigo San Jose Forum, Costa Rica
Holiday Inn Hotel Laval- Montreal, Canada
Holiday Inn Hotel Frankfurt – Airport, Germany
Staybridge Suites Guadalajara Expo, Mexico
The PointBreaks promotion is available on a first-come-first-serve basis so if there is a property, then you should not wait to make a reservation.
I’m crossing my fingers to grab close to a week at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bangkok which is on the preview list. I will be in Bangkok for 5 days next month so it would be an exceptional savings to book the stay for 25,000 points with the PointBreaks deal. Usually, a one night stay if redeeming with points is 25,000 points.
IHG recently changed their terms and conditions for making PointBreaks reservations. The new rule targets those who book basically a whole month of nights through separate one night reservations in case their travel plans change. Later they would cancel the nights they didn’t want while keeping the 5,000 point per night rate on the rest. This would be done because if you modify your reservation, the PointBreaks rate would be lost and you would have to rebook, possibly losing the PointBreaks rate.
With the new rule you are limited to 2 reservations per month, per hotel. You can still reserve multiple nights per stay, but you can only make 2 separate reservations at most per month at one hotel. It’s a fair change so that more people can actually make reservations at the PointBreaks rate.
How to Get IHG Rewards Points
There are a few ways that you can earn IHG rewards points. One way is with the IHG Rewards Select MasterCard which has a public sign up bonus offer of 60,000 points, but on FlyerTalk there is a link to a better 80,000 point sign up bonus. With the 80,000 point bonus you earn, you can book 16nights at the PointBreaks rate which is really exceptional if you’re travel plan are in line with some of the locations.
IHG is constantly running various promotional offers that can be a great way to earn rewards points. Currently, new members of IHG Priority Club Dining can earn 1,000 points for signing up and spending $30 at a qualifying restaurant using a credit or debit card that is registered to your dining account.
You can earn another 1,000 points by watching a 90-second IHG promotional video and using one of the promo codes.

The Rundown
If you want to save money and your points, the IHG PointBreaks list is the way to go especially if your travel plans correspond with the locations that are available this quarter. I am a fan of IHG Reward Club and because there are locations all over the world, there is always a chance that a PointBreaks night will be available wherever your travel may lead you.
If you’re not traveling this summer, you can wait for the new PointBreaks list to come out at the end of July and earn more points in the meantime!
