Zagreb is one of the busiest metropolitan cities in Croatia. Full of skyscrapers, museums, high-end shopping, cafes, metro systems and universities it still keeps it’s classic beauty in tact. I absolutely loved Zagreb. After spending almost a month in Croatia, Zagreb had the most diversity out of all the cities I visited, so if you find yourself here, be sure to take advantage of some of its offerings. Even better, here is a list of free things to do in Zagreb!
Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb
Zagreb has many great museums and the MOCA of Zagreb is the largest museum ever built in the city. The museum has exhibits from all over the world including works of art by Croatian artists and internationally renowned artists. On the first Wednesday of every month, admission to the MOCA is free.
Spend the day at a Park
The parks in Zagreb have all been carefully planned out in its landscape design and purpose. There are several parks throughout Zagreb with lots of space to picnic, ride bikes, go for a run, people watch, or just kickback and admire the beautiful landscaping. Check out the Art Pavilion with its beautiful manicured lawns, sculptures and Venetian-style buildings in the backdrop. Also visit the Zrinjevac park which has a rustic look and is surrounded by museums.
Gradec Summer Nights Film Under the Stars
Going to the outdoor cinema is a popular pastime in Zagreb during warm summer nights in Uppertown. Bring a blanket, chairs and a picnic and you have yourself a free night at the movies under the stars. There are 300 stadium style seats already set up, but you’re more than welcomed to turn it into a cozy affair. Even if you don’t understand the language of the film, it’s definitely worth a go.
Music at the Park
One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to go to a music at the park type event at a park where you can relax and listen to live music while having a bottle of wine, cheese and a baguette. The people living in Zagreb enjoy this too! At Zrinjevac Park there are live musical performances at the music pavilion every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sundays at the Maksimir park also from 11 to 1 p.m.
Bundek Lake
If you’re looking for a place to go for a swim, Bundek Lake which is in South Zagreb offers free entry to the lake. During the summer you can swim or go boating. The beaches are sandy unlike the pebble beaches on much of the coastline and islands and there are lifeguards on duty. Around the lake there are also bike paths and lots of green spaces to lay out on so even if you’re not going for a swim, there’s other activities you can engage in.
